DURIAN – A STINKY FRUIT!

When taking a taxi trip in Kuala Lumpur I saw inside the cab a sign of a crossed-out fruit. What does it mean? Is any fruit forbidden to travel with in Malaysia? This is interesting … This was my first encounter with a fruit called durian. I noticed many places in the city with the sign „No durian” I saw the signs in hotels, restaurants, shopping malls. Why? The reason was a disgusting smell, which is difficult to get rid of. Massively cultivated and eaten in Malaysia, the fruit resembles a melon with spikes. It is sold on streets and I noticed a lot of places offering durian. The fruit is very popular, tasty and healthy. As for the smell, the opinions are different – some say that it smells like moldy material, others like stale meet … For me it smelled of ammonia. The smell was awful! My opinion on taste – I really prefer mango 🙂 In Asia durian is eaten not only raw. Asians serve it in the form of desserts, stuff it with dough, make cocktails, puddings and ice cream as well as soups and sauces. Seeds are also edible. I was able to try durian in a cake. 🙂 You probably will not find durian in Europe because of the persistent odor and transport bans, so if you are in Asia, I recommend you try it. Such a small Asian culinary curiosity!
